My name is aliyah I’m in Dr.kirks 5th period class. I’m recommending the book Pieces of Georgia’s by Jennifer Bryant. It is in present day. In this book there are Georgia, Tiffany, Georgia dad, and Georgia’s mom. In this book Georgia’s mom passes away and Georgia dad gets very sad and depressed. Georgia’s dad works most of the day so Georgia is always alone with Tiffany or her dog. Georgia loves to paint and she is a wonderful artist. Her art teacher gave her a form for her dad to fill out about Georgia entering a chance to win an art contest. Georgia suddenly gets this free pass to an art museum down the street. She doesn’t know who it is from. But she still visits the museum when her dad isn’t home. Georgia spends all her time drawing when her dad isn’t around. When Georgia goes to work with her dad she draws the other construction workers. Georgia doesn’t really like her life but at the end she loves it.

Hi my name is Ryan and I am in Dr. Kirk’s 6th period class. The book that I am doing for my blog is On the Field with …. Derek Jeter. This book was written by Matt Christopher. The setting of the book usually takes place on the baseball field and the time of the book is year round. The characters are Derek, his mom, his dad, his sister, his trainers, his teammates, and his coaches. In this book it tells about Derek’s life and the beginning of his baseball career. I think 1the author’s purpose was to inform people on Derek’s beginning baseball career and his life. I recommend this book because it is informational about him.

Hi, my name is Taylor. I am in Dr. Kirk’s 6th period class. The book that I am recommending is called Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin. The main character is Elizabeth Hall (Liz). It takes place in Elsewhere, a place so like Earth, yet completely different. This is where Liz has found herself after dying in a bicycle-meets-taxi accident. After taking a long ride on the SS Nile, Liz realizes that she’s not in a dream at all, but really, truly dead. When she arrives on Elsewhere, she meets her maternal grandmother, Betty, for the very first time. A woman who died at fifty from breast cancer. Betty is now a woman in her thirties. One of the first surprises Liz is in for is the fact that, on Elsewhere, lives are lived backward from the age of a person’s death. Liz spends her first month on Elsewhere spending all of her time to watch her family, friends, and classmates back on Earth. She’s soon a regular at the OD’s, or Observation Decks, watching life on Earth pass her. It takes awhile, but Liz finally realizes that spending hours upon hours at the OD’s is not helping her adjust to life on Elsewhere. She once again befriends Thandi, a young girl killed on Earth by a stray bullet, who was her bunkmate on the SS Nile. She gets closer to grandmother Betty, finally takes a job in the Division of Domestic Animals helping recently departed pets find new owners, and seems to be finding a place on Elsewhere. What will happen? Will Liz eventually get back to Earth? Will she ever see her family again? Read this book to find out! I recommend this book because it’s really a great book, very interesting too. Once you start to read it, you just can’t stop.

David is being abused by his ungrateful mother and cannot stop it. So one day he leaves his house and goes by a pizza place. He sees two men eating pizza by a pool table with 2 quarters on the table. He takes the quarters, goes inside and orders a pizza. The man working there called the police and his dad. He gets in trouble for stealing but gets a free pizza because he told the worker that he is being abused. His dad picks him up and takes him home. Finally, David goes to the foster home. The purpose of this book is to tell people about his life. This book is very good and you should read it.

    January 9, 2012 at 3:00 pm

Hi my name is Daphne and I’m in Dr.Kirk’s 5th period class. I am recommending you to read the book “Scat” by Carl Hiaasen. This book took place around modern time and it was taken in a town. The main characters in this book are Nick, Martha, Mrs.Starch, and Duane. Nick is in Mrs. Starch’s biology class. Mrs.Starch is also the most feared teacher in his private school. Then one day during class Mrs. Starch saw Duane picking his acne then Mrs. Starch made him write an essay on zits. Duane got so mad he bite her pencil that she was holding in half. Then the next day they went to a field trip to the Black Vine Swamp. There suddenly was a fire and so Mrs. Starch told all the kids to get on the bus and Mrs. Starch will follow behind. A few days later the investigators said that the fire was a set one not a natural fire. Then now everyone thought it was Duane because he got mad at Mrs. Starch. So was it Duane who set the fire??? Read the book to find out!!! The author’s purpose for this book is to show bravery and to never give up. I recommend this book not only because it was good but because if you actually read it further then it’s actually a book that you can’t put down while you’re reading it. I hope you will like this book!!! :)

The author is trying to say don’t try to fight against your ruler of your country cause bad things happen. I recommend this book because is a great story and it may have some violence to the book but it’s a wonderful story that Suzanne Collins had made up.

In this book there is this half vampire named Darren Shan, and he and his mentor Mr. Crepsley found there were some killings going on in the place Mr. Crepsley grew up in. They soon figured out that it was a vampaneze that was killing all the innocent people. Darren met this girl named Debbie and ended up really liking her, and that’s when he got his first kiss. They trapped the vampaneze in Debbies house and killed him. Debbie and her parents were safe and sound.

  10. Hallie

    January 9, 2012 at 2:51 pm

Hello, my name is Hallie Eidson. I am in Dr. Kirk’s 6th period class. I am in the middle of a good book called Olive’s Ocean, by Kevin Henkes. This book takes place at Martha’s grandmother’s cottage. The characters in this story are Olive (temperately), Martha, Godbee, and a boy….. Who was not on Martha Boyle’s hate list any longer! Olive was riding on her bike, just minding her own business when she was hit by a truck. Martha, Olive’s classmate was in shock but she overcame that until the day Martha’s doorbell rang. Martha opened it up and saw Olive’s mom standing at the door. She was not sure why she was there, but then Olive’s mom handed Martha a note. It had been ripped out of Olive’s journal when her mom was going through all of her stuff. Martha read it, it had said that Olive wanted an ocean named after her and that Martha Boyle was the nicest person she had ever met she dearly love Martha and wished for nothing more. When Martha was packing up her suit case she kept on thinking how am I going to do this? When she got to Fl., the first thing she did was go to the ocean; she was not put out for this going to the ocean after her friend had passed on. Olive had always wanted an ocean. So why was Olive there with her? The author in my perspective wrote this because she want to point out you don’t know what you have till it’s gone. I really do love this book, but I am in the middle so I don’t have very much to say, but enjoy!! I would recommend this book because I feel that it would inspire you to be a better friend. :)

    January 9, 2012 at 2:51 pm

Hi my name is Jenna and I’m in Dr. Kirk’s 6th period class. The book I want to recommend is shooting the moon by Frances O’Roark Dowell. This book takes place in a small town. The main character is a twelve year old girl named Jamie who is excited for her brother who is going to Vietnam. Jamie’s father was all about the army and the historical sites. Their whole lives growing up were all about the army and moving from one place to another. So when her brother was accepted they both were thrilled but not their parents. Her brother and she were confused on why their dad didn’t seem happy about him joining the army. When Jamie’s brother goes off to Vietnam, he sends back the film he has taken to her .If she wants to know what the pictures are of she must figure out how to develop the film. I believe the purpose of this book is to explain that your hopes and dreams are never certain. This book is exciting and in formational because it tells about war and the decisions of a young girl.

    January 9, 2012 at 1:55 pm

Hello my name is Ethel from Dr.Kirk’s fifth period class and my favorite book is Only the Good Spy Young by Ally Carter. The book has four main characters named Cammie, Rebecca, Liz and Macy; and its about the girls going to a private school for spies but nobody really knows that it’s a spy school. The school is called the Gallagher Acadamy and in the book Cammie’s teacher is being accused for killing Cammie’s father but Cammie doesn’t believe it so she follows her insects in order to find out the truth along with her friends and a boy named Zack who she doesn’t trust but is attracted to.I think that this book is great because it has some action into it but also has a very girly theme to it as well.I think that girls should read this book because it’s a really great book

    January 9, 2012 at 1:27 pm

Hi my name is Jana and I am in Dr. Kirk’s 4th period class. The book I recommend is Letters from Rapunzel. The author is Sara Lewis Holmes. This book is a Georgia Book Award in 2009. This book is also winner of Ursula Nordstorm First Fiction Contest. The setting takes place in modern days and Homework Club, home, and the bridge. The main character is a girl that is called Rapunzel. She thinks her dad is under an evil spell and can’t come home. Her mom thinks that is weird because there is no such thing. Rapunzel has some problems in her life. For example, her dad is under an evil spell and no one will help her. She finds part of a letter addressed to box#5667 to see if that person will help her with her dad. Every letter Rapunzel writes, this person never writes back. So Rapunzel is on an adventure to find the cure to everything. I think the theme of the book is to try anything and you will succeed. I recommend this book because I feel that when you will finish this book, you will want to be just like Rapunzel.

  14. Brittany

    January 9, 2012 at 1:08 pm

Hi, I’m Brittany. I’m in Dr.Kirks 4th period class. The book I’m reviewing is The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. This book is about a girl named Dorothy and her dog toe-doe and they lived in Kansas. One day a cyclone picked up her house and brought it to the land of the Munchkins, little did Dorothy know that her house landed on the Wicked Witch of the West. She took the witch of the West’s silver shoes and was off on her way to Oz to see if she could ever get back home. On her journey she meets a Scarecrow, Woodman, and Lion who also want to get something from Oz. In this book the Author is trying to take you away and bring you into a fantasy land. I think the author’s purpose is to take your mind off things and bring you into the book. I recommend this book because you will never want to put it down and want to read the whole book in one day. They face many obstacles on their journey including the Wicked Witch of the East. Will Dorothy and toe-doe ever get back to Kansas?

  15. Nick

    January 9, 2012 at 10:38 am

Hi I’m Nick. I am in Dr. Kirk’s 2nd period class. Last semester I read a book called Maximum ride the angel experiment. It was a really good book. The author was named James Patterson. He’s a great author. The book took place in an old house shaped like a E on its side. Then the characters went to New York. The characters were very important in the story. The four main characters were bird like creatures. Their names are Max, Angel, Fang, Iggy, nudge, and the gasman. The characters get hunted by these people that form into wolves and are called erasers. In the book the erasers kidnapped Angel. The rest of the flock has to rescue her. I think the author wrote this because he wanted to tell everyone that it’s alright to be different from others. In the book Max wants to be normal.

  16. Chavanne

    January 9, 2012 at 10:30 am

Hi, my name is Chavanne. I’m in Dr. Kirk’s 5th period class. The book I read is titled, “King George: what was his problem? Everything your schoolbooks didn’t tell you”, written by Steve Sheinkin. This story takes place during the 1700’s in England. At the time Britian, France, and Spain had selected territory for themselves in the United States. They war they were fighting is the American Revolution. A revolution that was fought for land and freedom. The British and French fought until they came to a compromise. They each had their own land and were now happy. The author wrote this book to show the wonders and difficulties of the American Revoltuion. I would recommend this book because it is very educational and an easier way to learn about some of the history of our world. If you read this book you will definetly enjoy it.

My name is Heather Nuckols and I am in Dr. Kirk’s 2nd Class. I think the book Out of Mind by Sharon M. Draper is a great book. It takes place when Melody (main character) is in 5th grade. Melody is not able to talk, walk, or do a lot of things people like you and I can. This book takes place in Melody’s house and school. The characters are: Melody, melody’s mom, Melody’s dad, Melody’s aide, Melody’s little sister, and Melody’s teacher. Melody’s life is hard enough with being very, very amazingly smart, but nobody knows it. Melody’s family knows how smart she is. Her strong-willed mother will doing anything to show people that. Melody researches a computer that and translate her thought into words, then she goes out for her school academic team. Does
Melody make it? Does she show the bratty kids in her class that she is smarter? You will just have to read! 

  21. April

    January 6, 2012 at 3:06 pm

Hey, my name is April. I’m in Dr. Kirk’s 6th period class. The book that I read and loved is My Sister’s Keeper, by Jodi Picoult. This book took place in 2010 mainly in a hospital, court house, a house, and a fire station. The main characters are Anna, Kate, Sara, Jesse, and Bryan Fitzgerald. Anna is a 13 year old girl whose sister, Kate, is 16 and trying to fight cancer. But Anna is not just any 13 year old. She was born specifically to give Kate blood and bone marrow. Her parents, Sara and Bryan, needed someone to save Kate’s life, so they “made” Anna. Anna’s brother Jesse is a trouble-making 18 year old that still lives in his parent’s house. He doesn’t get much attention from his parents, so he goes out and sets fires to stranded buildings. One day, Kate went to the doctor and they found out that she needed a new kidney. So everyone turned to Anna. But Anna didn’t want to “donate” her body anymore. There for, she sued her own parents. The rest of the book mainly just about the trial between Anna and her parents. Who wins you ask? READ THE BOOK TH FIND OUT!! I think the author wrote this book because because she wanted to tell of a girl who is on this earth because she needs to be. I recommend this book because it is really amazing. It’s a heart grabbed and a tear jerker. And yes I did cry reading it. So read this book. Your welcome

My name is Parker and I’m in Dr. Kirk’s 6th period class. I would recommend reading the book: The Fantastic Secrets of Owen Jester by: Barbara O’ Connor. He found something amazing by the train tracks. Will Owen figure out what it is? Read the book to find out.

  24. Abby

    January 6, 2012 at 2:19 pm

Hi. My name is Abby and I am in Dr.Kirk’s 5th period reading class. There are many different books that I would have to recommend. However, the book that I think tops all of the other books that I have read; it would have to be A Child Called “It” BY: Dave Pelzer. The setting of this particular book takes place during the school year and the abusing takes place at his home and during the school year. This individual book has many different characters that all interact with each other in some way or another. The characters in this book include: The main character as Dave Pelzer (when he was a child), his abusive and alcoholic mother, his abandoning father, and his 3 other brothers. The brothers of the Pelzer family, all see what his abusive and alcoholic mother does to him. However, none of them choose to stick up for their brother while the abusing gets more severe over the years. The main theme and purpose of Dave writing his own story of his childhood years is to encourage everyone to help all of the young child that have the same abuse from their parents as he did. The reason why I have chosen to this recommend this particular book would have to be, because it makes me feel like if I can help one person from the same suffering, in particular to what happened to Dave, that we can all stop abusive mothers and fathers from hurting their children any more. I recommend this book to all ages. My specific opinion is for everyone to read this book. I promise you will enjoy every minute that you read it. The book, A Child Called “It” By Dave Pelzer, is about a young boy fighting for survival. He faces some pretty intensifying obstacles in his journey. In example: eating his baby brothers own feces, drinking ammonia, stuck in a cold bath, burnt on an gas stove, stabbed, and starved. His so called “mother” physically and emotionally abused him. His mom thought of everything as a game. Sometimes Dave would be feed scraps of his brother’s food and most of the time fed nothing at all. In this particular story, it will hopefully make everyone want to make a difference in the world and save all of the poor children from the hard life that Dave had to go though.

It takes place after a huge war and the people that didn’t die during that war were placed into 12 different districts. All 12 districts together make up Panem. The main characters are Katniss, Pita, and Gale. Gale and katniss have been friends for a while and Gale calls katniss katnip. Every year the government has the hunger games to remind them what happened to them. Two people from each district get picked to go to the hunger games. One man and one woman. The winner gets unlimited food and a good home. Everyone else is dead that was in the hunger games. I recommend this book because it is filled with action, adventure, and even some romance. This is a Fantastic book. It is the first book in the series 3 books. I have read them all and loved them all!

    January 6, 2012 at 2:04 pm

Hi I’m Cain and I’m in Dr. Kirk’s 5th period class. My favorite series is called The Demonata and the first book in this series is Lord Loss and it’s from Darren Shan. In the book you go to houses and into other dimensions and meat evil creatures (Demons) and it stars and around the 21st century and you don’t really talk about what’s happening in the real world. I don’t know all the characters and could not name them all if I did know but I do know one and his name is Grubitsch Grady but he likes to be called Grubbs he is the main character for book 1 and book 2 and I’m not sure if he is in the others cause that’s all I’ve read. First of all if your into scary books then this is the best one for you and grubs is at home and is about to go to a aunts house so his parent can go see a play with his sister but he goes back home because he thinks something fishy is going on and then……….

    January 6, 2012 at 1:58 pm

Hi my name is Jordan, I’m in Dr. Kirk’s 5th period class. I’m recommending the book “Finally” by Wendy Mass. This book is about a girl named Rory Swenson; the story takes place when Rory is 11. Rory has been waiting her whole life for the day she turns twelve, because when she would always ask her parents for something they had always said when you’re twelve. So when her parents first said “No, when your 12 you can,” Rory started to right everything on a list until that day came. Some things on her list were to get a cell phone, get contacts, and to stay home alone. When her 12th birthday FINALLY comes, she gets to do everything that she has on her list, but it seems to good to be true. Find out what happens in the adventurous story. This book is AR, it is a 4.6 and it is worth 9 points. Enjoy reading!

Ty said that it was his birthday and that his aunt wanted him home early. Ty is a very good football player and he is trying for the school team. His brother is about to get drafted in the NFL and he wants his little brother, Ty, to go with him. It is on a Friday. Since then, the two of them have been going out every Friday to go out for dinner then go do something after that.

  30. Madison

    January 6, 2012 at 1:48 pm

My name is Madison from Dr. Kirk’s 5th period reading class. Recently I have read the book: Pool Boy by Michael Simmons. This book is about a 16 year old king…or at least he thinks he thought he was living in a busy city surrounded by all of his friends. This book is about a 16 year old king…or at least he thinks he thought he was living in a busy city surrounded by all of his friends. The theme of this book is to show people that life can be good at times but if something goes the wrong way unexpectedly, to be able to still support yourself. I recommend this book because it is fun, exciting, and really shows how Brett decides to give up the “cool guy” act and be trustworthy. Will Brett ever wake up from reality? . January 6, 2012 at 1:21 pm

My name is Paige Richards and I am in Dr.Kirk’s 4th period. I read the book Scat By: Carl Hiaasen. This book took place in Florida, in the school year of probably 2010. The time is not stated, but taking all the technology into consideration, it is a good guess that it took place in present time, not in the past or future. The main characters are: Nick, Mrs. Starch, and Duane (a.k.a- Smoke). Nick goes to the Truman Private School. Nick’s father was in Iraq while he stayed with his mother. Nick was a very strong boy. Mrs. Starch, with her full name being Bunny Starch, is the most feared teacher in Truman Private School. She teaches biology and despises Duane. Her house is full of endangered species, stuffed animal form of course! Duane is a large boy who is a pyro, one who likes to set fires on purpose. He despises Mrs. Starch as much as she despises him. Nick is sitting in class one day and Mrs. Starch is talking about the field trip they will be going on tomorrow. They go to the Black Swamp. Mrs. Starch goes back into the swamp to get a kids inhaler, but she doesn’t come back. Nick teams up with a friend and tries to figure out where she has gone. Will they find Mrs. Starch, or is she gone forever? The author’s purpose was to teach kids about endangered species and to take care of the animals in the wild. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a good mystery. I really loved this book; it was my kind of genre. It was a superb book.

  32. Alexa

    January 6, 2012 at 1:17 pm

Hello. My name is Alexa. I am in Dr. Kirk’s 4th period class. I’m going to be recommending a magical book called “Savvy” by Ingrid Law. This book takes place in present day Kansaska, Nebraska. Mib Beaumont is longing for the day her “Savvy”, a unique magical power that is only given to her, is revealed. Each member of Mib’s family has their own savvy. Soon enough, on her 13th Birthday, she got her savvy. With her magical power, she now has the ability to hear what other people are thinking by what that person’s tattoo is saying to her. The down side to this is that just when she finally gets her savvy, her father gets injured in a car accident. She now hears everyone’s thoughts but can barely hear her own. She has to learn to control her new savvy. The author’s purpose is to tell the reader to never stop chasing your dreams until you finally catch them. I recommend this book because it is wonderful and it tells a good life lesson. If you put the book down and don’t finish, then you’ll just have to survive the suspense. ;)

    January 6, 2012 at 1:02 pm

My name is Hayes Poindexter. I attend Dr. Kirk’s 4th period class. In Dr. Kirk’s class I have read many books but my all time favorite is Football Hero by Tim Green. It takes place in the Georgia Dome on Sundays. It is about a boy named Troy White who knows what play the opposing offense is going to run. He has a passion for the Atlanta Falcons, because his mom works for them. But no one believes him but his grandfather and all star linebacker Seth Holloway. So Seth and Troy have to fight to let Troy White help the falcons to victory. Tim Green writes this classic to show how a young boy can live his ultimate dream. I recommend this to anyone who is looking for a great read. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat at all times! If you don’t read this you’re surely missing out!

Hi, ny name is Danny. Im in Dr. Kirks 2nd period class. My book that I read was Drums, Girls, & Dangerous pie and the author is Jordan Sonnenblick. When it took place was from the beginning of the school year to the end of the year. The characters are Steven, Jeremy(Steven’s little brother), there Dad and Mom, Renee Alhart, and Anettee. When Steven has a normal life with an anoying brother, Jeremy falls of his stool and bangs his nose and gets an extremely bad bloody nose and goes to the hospital. When he gets checked out they found out he got cancer. You have to find out yourself what happens next in the story. The authors purpose was because he might have had a brother get cancer or known someone got cancer. I recomened this book because it’s a book tht keeps you on your tips of your toes to know whats going to happen next. Its kinda sad in the end but very good book!!! I LOVE THAT BOOK!!!

  35. Arin

    January 6, 2012 at 10:26 am

My name is Arin and I’m in Dr. Kirk’s second period class. The book that I’m writing about is Anything But Typical. The authors name is Nora Raleigh Baskin. The setting take place at a modern middle school, I’m a 7th grade class room. The character are Jason (autism boy), Jeremy (little brother), mom, and dad. In the book Jason is trying to fit in with the other ids but he just can’t. He is trying to tell his my so many things that he wishes to say but won’t come out. He uses to have an aid at school but now he doesn’t because his mother doesn’t think he needs one. He was diagnosed with autism when he was eight years old. His mother never used those words though. He can’t look people in the eye when he is listening to someone, it distracts him. People don’t think he is listening but he really is. He has this website that he goes on everyday called, storyboard. He can post stories and read other people stories and comment on them! There is a girl named phoenix bird as her computer name! He thinks they are boyfriend and girlfriend, but they have never met. Will they ever meet? Read the book to find out. I think the purpose the author wrote this book was to tell people that everybody is different but we can all do the same things, even though we may do it different. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read books on peoples life and how they can handle being different. If you read the book Out of My Mind you will definitely love this book.

My name is Ethan Branch and I am in Dr. Kirk’s second period class. I’m reviewing the book The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan. In this book the setting is in the mortal and immortal worlds. The characters are Percy Jackson, Annabeth, Grover, Hades, Poseidon, Zeus, and Tyson. I liked the book because there was a lot happening the book. Percy, Annabeth and Grover go on adventures either in the mortal or immortal world. Every time they went on adventures either the mortal or immortals world depended on them. They all stayed at a camp called Camp Half- Blood. The camp taught them how to fight, defend, and strategy. The three of them get into a lot of trouble. Percy’s dad is Poseidon the sea god, so Percy and control water too. Annabeth’s mom is Athena goddess of love and war. Tyson is like a brother to Percy, Tyson is a Cyclops they met in one of the adventures. This book is the last in the series and I think it is very good.

  38. Brooke

    January 6, 2012 at 9:45 am

Hi, my name is Brooke. I’m in Dr. Kirk’s first period class and I read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. This book takes place in the future in many places that the author calls Districts. The characters names are Katniss, Peeta, Prim, and Haymitch. There is a lot more but I can’t list all of them. The point of The Hunger Games is twelve boys and twelve girls from the age of 12 to 19, are put in a drawing to participate in the Hunger Games. Katniss is sixteen and Prim, her sister, is twelve, and they live in District 12. Their names are put in the drawing and Prim’s name gets drawn. She is only twelve years old and it’s the first year that her name is in the drawing, so Katniss takes her place in the Hunger Games. The boy’s name that got drawn is Peeta. After the drawing, Katniss and Peeta got to the Capitol to participate in the Hunger Games. I thought the author’s purpose was to entertain us of what she thinks the future will be like. I would recommend this book to anyone. It has action and a little bit of romance, truly a great read.

  39. Zachary

    January 6, 2012 at 9:41 am

Hi my name is Zachary Morris. I’m in doctor Kirk’s first period class. The Adventures Tom sawyer, Twain, Mark is the title. Tom sawyer, Aunt Polly, Sid, Injinjoe, and Hucklebarry fin. Tom always is doing something. When he’s is wet washing the fence, and ends up getting others to help. When he’s goes pirating for a couple of days and sneaks back just to get yelled at by Aunt Polly. Tom doesn’t really like school very much but Sid loves it. Tom is always in everyone’s business and annoying everyone. He always gets beaten by his teacher for being bad. The author’s purpose is to show how bad people can do something good. I will recommend this story because it is really great story and a great book and if you’ve seen the movie you are missing parts of the story.

  40. Richard

  41. Rusty

    January 6, 2012 at 9:39 am

Sup, I’m Rusty Black, and I am in Dr. Kirk’s, first period, reading class. This review is on the book: Drums Girls and dangerous Pie, by Jordan Sonnenblick. It’s about a young drummer in the eighth grade named Steven Alper. This guy lives with his parents, and his extremely annoying, little brother Jeffery. In this book, Steven dreams of becoming the best and most well performing drummer in the all city school jazz band. At the same time, he yearns for the girl of his dreams. Renee Albert. While this is going on, Steven’s little brother Jeffery gets diagnosed with a blood cancer known as leukemia. During this hardship, Steven’s family goes through a terrible time of financial problems, and fear of losing their youngest kid, Jeffery. At the same time Steven finds himself going through a time of serious mental stress, fear, and blaming himself for everything going on. It all comes down to the same three questions; is the Alper family going to lose everything they own trying to pay off debts? Is Steven going to be able to keep himself together? And will the four year old, innocent child live, or die?

  42. Sarah

    January 6, 2012 at 9:37 am

Hey! My name is Sarah. I’m in Dr. Kirk’s first period class. I’m doing a book blog on the City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. The book takes place in present day.
A girl named Clary was your every day regular girl, but one day all of that changed. She went to a club with her friend Simon, and right then and there her life changed. She watched this cute boy go into a back room, so she followed him. Then all the sudden Jace (her brother) come out to kill the cute guy. That’s when Clary screamed and startled Jace. After that he got beat up by the cute boy, but he was really a demon.
Now the characters in the book are a little odd. We have Magnus who is a warlock who gets everything he wants by snapping his fingers. There’s Alec Lightwood he is the mean bad boy character, but he’s sweet on the inside. Isabelle Light wood is Alec’s preppy sister. She has long black hair and she most the time wears dresses. Clary is the main character in the story.
If you like the funny-cant-stop-reading-this-book kind of story then this is a book for you. This book will make you wonder what’s going to happen next. Clary is torn between being a normal person and being a shadow hunter. She must make a decision. Later in the book her mom gets put in the hospital all because of her dad. Now she wants to find her dad and kill him. With the help of Jace and his friends they discover that he has been stealing the mortal instruments. Will they stop him in time?
The author’s purpose for writing this book is for entertainment and suspense. What do you think will happen? The book is funny yet gruesome at the same time. The reason I’m recommending this book is because it’s extremely interesting. I mean wouldn’t you want to live in a world with monster, fairies, and warlocks?

  43. Cydney

    January 6, 2012 at 9:34 am

Hi, my name is Cydney and I am in Dr.Kirk’s first period class. The book that I would highly recommend is Prom and Prejudice by Elizabeth Eulberg. Prom and Prejudice takes place in present day at Longburn Academy for Girls and Lizzie is only at this school because she got a musical scholarship and cannot afford it. During this time her best friend falls in love with a none snobby rich boy named Charles. Unlike Carles Lizzie is poor and his friend is snobby, stuck up, and rich and she envies him, but still finds herself drawn to him. Will it be her pride or his prejudice that keeps them apart, or will they end up going to prom together?

  44. Katelyn

    January 6, 2012 at 9:31 am

Hi my name is Katelyn and I’m in Dr. Kirk’s first period class, and I’m reviewing the book Mockingbird, by Kathryn Erskine. This book takes place in Caitlin’s home were here dad covers a chest with gray piece of cloth. As you can already tell, Caitlin is the main character in this book. She lives with her dad because her mom died. There’s also Mrs. Brook her school counselor who tries to help her in any way she can. Caitlin also has a friend named Michael who is one of the little kids at her school. A brief summary of this story is that Caitlin’s, who has a disorder called Asperger’s where I think she takes everything literally and doesn’t understand emotions, older brother Devon was killed in a school shooting, so know she is trying to get to closure by finishing Devon’s eagle scout chest. She’s also learning with Mrs. Brook on how to act a little more normal, and on how to make friends. Read the book and find out if she ever makes it to closure. I think the author wrote this book, because she wanted people to know how it felt to have a disorder while going through a tragedy, and who hard is just to be normal. I would recommend this book, because first of all it’s a Georgia book award nominee. Also it’s full of laughter, tears, and love, so I think this would book for anyone, even if you’re a person who doesn’t like to read.

  45. Mckenzie

    January 6, 2012 at 9:29 am

My name is McKenzie. I’m in Dr. Kirk’s first period class. The book I’m reviewing is “Out of my mind”. The author is Sharon Draper. The setting is at her school and at home. The main characters are Melody, her mom, her dad, and Rose. The story is about a mentally retarded girl named Melody she can’t talk, walk, or even take herself to the restroom. She is very smart but, she can’t show it. Her next store neighbor Mrs. V teaches her almost everything she knows. She wants to go to school but the doctor says she is too stupid to go to school though. Well, her mom didn’t agree to that so she is now in school. She gets this machine that when she types something in it speaks for her. She is super smart so she is on the geography team. Well, they won the tournament so they are going to Washington D.C! So they left her and now she is really upset. I think the author’s purpose was to tell people what it is to be special needs. I think you guys should read this book because it is very good and it comes from her.

  46. Nick

    January 6, 2012 at 9:16 am

My name is Nick Wootton and I am in Dr .Kirk’s 1st period class. The name of the book I want to talk about is a book I really enjoyed and it is called A Strange Case of Origami Yoda and is by Tom Anglebinger. The setting is in a modern school where kids are trying to figure out if a piece of paper shape like Yoda from Star Wars really can tell the future. Some of the kids think it is real and others think it is all fake. The story is told by a journal or case files were different people talk about their experiences with Origami Yoda. Some of the characters in the book are Tommy the main character, Sarah, Harvey and Dwight who is the person who in control of Dwight. He is kind of like the person who talks for Origami Yoda. I think the author’s purpose of the book was to make the reader laugh and be able to enjoy a good book. I highly recommend this book and it is great for and nice relaxing fun read!

    January 5, 2012 at 3:25 pm

Hello, my name is Olivia Eppinette and I am in Dr.Kirk and Mrs. Williams 6th period class. I will be telling you about the book Deep, Dark, and Dangerous by Mary Hahn. The setting of this book is in two places: in a small neiborghood and at a mysterious lake. The time of the book is in the present day. I don’t remember the characters names , but I know that there is a mom ,a dad ,the moms sister , the moms daughter, and the moms sisters daughter, there is also a girl name sissy. In this story the mom always has a headache and she has a deep dark secret from her past. The father is a loving kind man to his family and will do anything for them. The aunt is a creative artist that loves her one child, and hates her ex-husband. The daughter is mostly always mad at her mother, she doesn’t understand her, and the daughter just wants excitement, us not the kind that the lake has to offer. Last but not least is the aunts daughter Emma she is very curious and does everything her cosign does, well she does anything anyone does. She has a big heart and wants to have friends really bad. Now I will give you a summary about this book. The aunt comes to vast her sister and her family before heading down to the lake house, which she had fixed up. Her and her sister went there all the time when they were little. But before the aunt got there her nice found a picture in one of her moms old books, it was a mysterious picture. But anyway they all help make dinner besides Emma and she cosign, and they all went to eat. Then the aunt asked her nice if she wanted to go to the lake house with her because she needed help watching Emma, the nice said YES! All three of them were happy except for her sister, she throws a hissy fit. Then, went upstairs with one of her” headaches”. But her daughter went to the lake house anyway. But when they got there Emma meet a little girl, and she was a lot of trouble. She might be the girl in the picture. Read the book to find out more. The author’s purpose is to excite you and make you wonder what’s going to happen next.

They get it and go to the next one. Harry finds the sword of Gryffindor and destroys the first horucrux. Harry knows that the next one is at Gringotts the wizard bank. They succeed and then they destroy it. Now they have a war at Hogwarts against Voldemort. Harry finds the last two and then faces Voldemort by himself.

  49. Matt

    January 5, 2012 at 3:22 pm

Hi! My name is Matt and I am in Dr. Kirk’s sixth period class. One of the many books I enjoyed reading is The Last Olympian, and this book is by Rick Riordan. The setting of this book is in modern day society. The characters are Percy Jackson, Annabeth, Grover, 12 greek gods, the titans, and all of the members from camp Half-blood. Percy Jackson and his friends Annabeth and Grover are given a message that the titan lord Kronos is coming back for his revenge on the Greek Gods. All of the half-bloods (especially Percy, Annabeth, and Grover) are the gods only chance because the gods are off fighting this titan monster in the shape of a storm. The titans are coming from all directions into New York. Percy gives up halfway through but then realizes that teamwork is the only way of ever completing something that one person alone can’t do. Do Percy and his friends kill the titan army and live in peace and harmony or do the titan army succeed and dominate the world starting with the Big Apple? Read this book to find out! This book was to remind readers to not give up and stick together no matter what happens. I recommend this book to other readers because its very action-packed and has a little bit of drama, but is a little sad and scary too. If you read this book then you won’t have wasted your time because it’s worth it!

  50. Shannon

    January 5, 2012 at 3:21 pm

My name is Shannon and I am in Dr.Kirk’s fifth period class. The book I am recommending is Perfect by Natasha Friend. This book was taken place in the present. The main character in this book was named Isabelle Lee. She suffered from bulimia and anorexia. She used this as a way to avoid her sisters and her mother’s grief, as well as her own, after her father passed away. The book talks about Isabelle becoming friends with the prettiest, most popular girl in school, Ashley Barnum. Isabelle later finds out that Ashley also suffers from bulimia and anorexia. This makes her disorder worse when Ashley teaches her new ways to lose more weight. I like this book a lot because it is told from Isabelle’s point of view, which helps me understand how she feels, along with all the pain she is going through. Natasha Friend tells an inspirational, realistic story of a life as a bulimic. I really recommend this book to anyone looking for a moving story.

  51. Kaleigh

    January 5, 2012 at 3:19 pm

Hi my name is Kaleigh. I’m in Dr. Kirk’s 6th period class. My book I would like to tell you about is A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard. The setting is in the backyard of Phillip and Nancy Garrido; through 1991 to 2009. During that time it was Jaycee Dugard, Phillip Garrido, Nancy Garrido, A Dugard , G Dugard. Jaycee was the victim. Phillip and Nancy were the kidnappers. A and G Dugard are Jaycee’s two kids. This is the true story of a girl named Jaycee Dugard. She was kidnapped at age eleven and kept prisoner for eighteen years. She was kept in a secret backyard, hidden from the world. She was sexually abused and used. Things that you would never think of. This is her story of what happened to her in that period of time. She was forced to become a mother at age 14 and 17. For eighteen years she survived an impossible situation. On August26, 2009, she took her name back. The only way she kept going was hope. The purpose of her writing this book is that her kidnapper thinks people shouldn’t know what he did. She isn’t ashamed and this is her way of saying, she survived. I recommend this book to everyone, even if you don’t like reading. Its breath taking and you won’t be able to put it down. It will change the way you look at life.

    January 5, 2012 at 3:17 pm

Hi my name is Matthew. I read the book Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz. It is an action novel about a kid named Alex. His parents died when he was a small boy. After his parents died he was put with his uncle named Ian. But one day when he went to work he didn’t come back. Later Alex found out that his uncle died in a car wreck. The cops said that he would have lived if he was wearing a seat belt. This was very odd to Alex because his uncle always wore one. So on his funeral day the speaker said that he was a patriotic person. After the funeral he went to find his car at the junk yard. When he found it, it was riddled with bullets. Then Alex got really curious and went to the bank his uncle worked at. And they told him he was a super spy. They ask him to replace his uncle as a spy. His mission is to find all of the Stormbreaker computers and disable them before they release a deadly toxin. That was a small over view of the book Stormbreaker. I read the book and really liked it, and I bet you will too.

    January 5, 2012 at 3:17 pm

My name is Declan and I am in Dr. Kirks 6th Period class. The book I am reccommending is called The Recruit By: Robert Muchamore. The story is about a 12 year old kid whose mother is a bandit in the year 2004 in the country of Great Britain. His name is james and he lives in a small town and goes to school like any other kid. But one day his mother dies and he goes to an orphanage. There a 14 year old boy named Kyle recruits him to be a member of CHERUB. CHERUB is a secret division of M15 British spys. There he is trained to go on missions only kids could do. I reccommended this book because it amazed me what the kids in this book did and how they did it.

    January 5, 2012 at 3:17 pm

Hi I’m Samantha and right now I’m in Dr. Kirk’s sixth period class. In the beginning of the year I read an interesting, sad book called “a child called it” by David Pelzer. It took place in the childhood of a man named David Pelzer. The characters in the book are mom, dad, David (it), and the brothers. The book is about a boy who is getting severely abused by his mother. He thinks his dad is someday going to save him but is a major alcoholic. He gets abused by being forced to drink poisons, stabbed, burned, cut, hit, and starved. His mom loves his brothers but treats him like trash. I think the author’s purpose was to make kids realize that you don’t know what happens to kids when they go home and to realize that there are crazy people out there who do that to kids. I truly recommend this book to others because it has a good main idea and keeps you breathless the whole time. I know that when I was reading it I couldn’t put it down and overall it was a great book.

Hi I’m Alex; I’m in Dr. Kirk’s 6th period class. The book I recommend is calling FOOTBALL HERO. It’s a great a book if you’re in to football. The setting takes place in present day. The main character is named Ty. Ty has had a pretty rough life. His parents are divorced and Ty doesn’t even know his own dad. The dad had abandoned him and the mom when Ty was very young. Now a day’s Ty is the quarterback for his middle school football. But he also helps the defense. You see Ty has this great ability to be able to read the other teams play. I don’t know if you play football or not but if you do you want that kid on your team! Back on story, Ty gets bullied sometimes but not awhile lot. His mom had gotten a job to work the Atlanta falcons. Which is Ty’s favorite team so now on Sundays he gets to watch the games? But one day he got to thinking. He thought what if I could help the Atlanta falcons out by helping their defense by the calling all the defensive plays? So Ty decides to talk to the manager of the falcons and what does the manger say? ABOUSOULT NOT! Read the book to see if Ty gets his dream job and what happens to his football team.

Hi I am Sarah and I am in Dr. Kirk’s 5th period class. One book that I really enjoyed reading was The Gollywhopper Games by Jody Feldman. This book takes place in a small town that has a big toy company. Gil Goodson is a brave and independent boy that wants to help his move. He enters the Gollywhopper Games hoping to win. Gil hopes he can win because his family had an ‘Incident’. And the only way they can move is if Gil wins the Gollywhopper Games and takes home the fortune! But he will have to go through a lot of brain teasers, number solving, puzzles, and stunts. With that he also has the owner of the company, Bert Gollywop, on to him. Will Gil win the fortune and all that comes with it? Read this book to find out! This adventurous book was written to help teach kids to meet their goals. I think you should read this book because it is exciting, adventurous, and entertaining. Well, I had a good time reading this book! Read it!

    January 5, 2012 at 2:21 pm

Hey, my name’s Erin, I’m in Dr.Kirk’s fifth period class. I would recommend that you should read the book Stick Figure. Stick Figure is a very good book! It’s about a girl whose name is Lori and is normal, athletic, and doesn’t have a problem with having a snack. Then, she goes on a trip to Washington, and decides that she doesn’t want to eat anything. Her mom and dad try everything that they can do to make her eat more, but Lori doesn’t budge. Eventually, her mom starts crying, her dad starts getting strict about it, and they decide to go to a counselor. The counselor does what he can, and soon sends Lori to the hospital. Lori stays there for a very long time, but still won’t do anything about her problem… I think that the author’s purpose about this book, is to let people know that they shouldn’t become anorexic, and not to worry so much about their weight. I would recommend this book, so people won’t ever get like that. It is a very good book, and sometime you should read it.

  58. Breanna

    January 5, 2012 at 2:19 pm

Hello students, teachers, and classmates. My name is Breanna. I am in Dr. Kirk’s 5th period class. I recommend the book “After Ever After” by Jordan Sonnenblick. It is also a Georgia Children’s Book Award nominee. It takes place in a modern neighborhood and at school. It’s about a boy named Jeffery (also called Jeff), who was diagnosed with cancer about three years ago, and has recovered. His best friend is Thadeus (or Tad). Tad fought cancer too, but also has recovered like Jeff. Except there is one HUGE difference. Tad is in a wheelchair. Jeff’s girlfriend Lizzie who just moved into their neighborhood, spends a little bit more time with Tad. Jeff loves to ride his bike, even with his bad leg, to take his mind of off school. One problem. Jeff is failing 8th grade. So Tad and Jeff make a promise. If Jeff gets Tad walking across the stage for graduation, Tad will make sure that Jeff passes 8th grade so he can walk across the stage to get his diploma. Jeff is starting to get jealous of Tad being around Lindsey way too much. Will Jeff stop being jealous? Will Tad survive his second battle with cancer? Read this book to find out! I recommend this book to every reader. I couldn’t put this book down! This book shows that if you never give up, you can do anything you put your mind to. Look for “After Ever After” in your library.

My name is Anna and I’m in dr. kirks 5th period class. The book that I will be talking about is twilight by Stephanie Meyer. The story takes place in forks where it rains all the time. The story’s main characters are Bella, and Edward. Bella is new to forks she just moved out of her mom’s house in phoenix. She moved because her mom and her new step dad are going to be on the road a lot. When she gets to phoenix she meets a group. But Edward try’s to avoid her. Edward sits as far away as possible from Bella. He even tries to get his schedule changed! Bella feels really upset and wants to get to know Edward. He skips school for a couple of days. Bella gets really self conscious. When Edward comes back to school he talks to Bella like nothing ever happened. Then all of the sudden he says that Bella and he should not even be friends. Will Edward ever just be friends with Bella? I recommend this book is good because it has a good plot and is very interesting. I think Stephanie Meyers purpose was to tell a great story.

  60. Morgan

    January 5, 2012 at 2:06 pm

Hi, my name is Morgan I’m in Dr. Kirks fifth period I recommend the book Angels in Pink (Raina’s Story). This book is really interesting it makes you want o read it all day. In the book there is a girl name Raina and her boyfriend’s name is Hunter. Well in the beginning Raina’s ex boyfriend from eighth grade comes back and told Hunter about all the stuff him and Raina did Hunter and Raina end up in a fight about. Then they finally make up as soon as Hunter has to go away to college and Raina finds out she may have to donate bone marrow to a lady with leukemia. One of Raina’s best friends also has boy drama in this book but it’s not too specific about it. Raina and her two best friends also volunteer at a hospital on the week end they are called the angels in pink. I think the author’s purpose in this book is to not give up on something on someone which you would learn if you read the book.

  61. Ashlyn

    January 5, 2012 at 1:28 pm

Hi, I’m Ashlyn from Dr.Kirk’s 4th period reading class. I recommend a great book that can go as a Georgia nominee Dewey book. The book is called “After Ever After”. It’s a sequel to another great book called “Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie”. This story takes place in modern time in a neighborhood and school. It’s about a boy named Jeffery, who was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago, and is now cancer free. His friend Thaddeus has fought cancer and is now cancer free too, and is now in a wheelchair. His new friend Lindsey, who just moved from California, is now his crush. Jeffery loves to ride his bike despite of his bum leg, which drags. Jeffery is failing 8th grade math, and now his school takes a test that determines if he passes or not, at the end of the year. Thaddeus, who is passing math, offers to tutor Jeffery. In exchange Jeffery will help Thaddeus walk across the stage during graduation, to get his certificate. Jeffery is also trying to get Lindsey as his own. Weeks before graduation Thaddeus is diagnosed with cancer again. Jeffery decides to have a big ride to raise money for thadues’s treatment. Can Jeffery pass? Will Jeffery get Lindsey for himself? Will Thaddeus survive cancer a second time? Read to find out! I recommend this book to any reader. “After Ever After” has some romance and action. It is great for all ages. This book is trying to show that you can do pretty much anything, as long as you work hard. Don’t forget to read the first book!

  62. Austin

    January 5, 2012 at 1:28 pm

My name is Austin Bennett and I’m in Dr. Kirk’s fourth period class. I will be talking about Pool Boys by Michael Simmons. The story takes place in California in the early September of 2006. The story’s main characters are Brett Gerson, Alfie, Brett’s father, and Frank, Brett’s best friend. It all started when Brett was a fifteen year old spoiled California kid. He was living the life; he had all the money, cars, and a huge mansion. However, his family never really knew what his father did to make such a large income. One ordinary day, Brett came inside from his pool and was going to ask if his dad could take them on a yacht ride for a day or too. He saw his father was pinned down by a couple police officers, and then he was taken to a jail five hours away! He finally was told his dad illegally made the income. He stole it in a weird way. He had to move in with his freak aunt that lived on the other side of the train tracks. Brett had to get a new job. He walked around his new neighborhood, and then Brett found an opened spot to be a pool cleaner. He got the job under his new boss, Alfie. Alfie was a rather old man. He had a bad heart condition, too. After getting to know Alfie and becoming such good friends, tragedy struck. The purpose of the book was to show that no matter the circumstance, always have a good attitude and be as happy and nice as possible. You should read the book. I recommend it because it has a great theme, the plot is exciting, and after reading each page you don’t want to stop. The whole story you are on the edge of your seat excited!

  63. Bella

    January 5, 2012 at 1:27 pm

My name is Bella and I am in Dr. Kirk’s fourth period class. The book I am recommending is Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine. This book is a Georgia book nominee for 2011/2012. This book was taken place in the present. The main character in this book was Caitlin, and she has Asperger’s Syndrome. She has trouble making friends, understanding people’s feelings, etc. The book tells her story about how she has to live without her brother, because her brother was killed in a school shooting. I like this book a lot because it is told from her point of view. This makes the story very entertaining and interesting because you get to see how she thinks and feels. She thinks very different than most people. I recommend you read this book, I think you would enjoy it. It was probably one of the best books I’ve ever read.

  64. Johnny

    January 5, 2012 at 1:26 pm

I am Johnny and I am in Dr. Kirk’s 4th period class and I read the book called Where The Mountain Meets The Moon. The book is by Grace Lin. The book takes place in the valley of the Fruitless Mountain. This takes place around the Middle Ages. The main characters are Minli, the Red Dragon, Ma, and Pa. Minli goes on adventure to restore her family fortune. As she goes along she meets a bunch of friends such as a Red Dragon. She starts this journey because her family is poor and they live off of rice. She goes over a mountain and much more. She has to find where the Old Man of The Moon is. He will give you any wish you desire. She then finds something else should happen instead of being wealthy. The author’s purpose of the book is to show that if you help other you will get good in return. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes an adventure that has a moral to the story. It was just a good book overall.

  65. Melany

    January 5, 2012 at 1:26 pm

Hi, my name is Melany. I am in Dr. Kirk’s fourth period class. A book that I would like to recommend is The Third Eye by Lois Duncan. It takes place in modern day. The main charcter is 18-year-old Karen Connors. She loves taking care of kids. She baby sits the Zenners kids 7 year old Bobby and 18-month-old Stefanie. While she was feeding Stefanie, she let Bobby go outside with his friends to play hide and go seek. The next day, Bobby goes missing. Karen calls the police, and they try to look for him. Strange things kept happening to Karen. She kept seeing Bobby in visions, it was almost like she could see, hear him, and see where he was. She could even smell the things that he could. She told the cops that he was in the trunk of Tim’s ( her boyfriend) car. A few weeks later, A policeman by the name of Ron Wilson comes by to ask for help on a case of a little girl who ran away with her father and went missing. This was a bit harder for her because she never met this girl, and didn’t have any emotions for her. She had some visions and saw her drown. A few days later she was out in the news for her amazing gift, a Third eye she called it. On her way to work at a day care, a stranger offered her a ride, but had to go to her apartment first. The stranger turned out to be a kidnapper and trapped her in the apartment, so they could kidnap all the kids. They ended kidnapping the children. Karen made a fire so the fire alarm would go off, so someone would walk in to find her. The manager came in later and got her out. A few days later, Officer Wilson came by and asked her to help find the missing kids. She uses her senses, and finds out what happens and what they planned to do to the kids. You have to read to find out! I loved this book so much; it was so exciting to see what happened next! Lois Duncan is an amazing author and I love all her books. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I do!

  66. Logan

    January 5, 2012 at 1:25 pm

My name is Logan I am in Dr.Kirk’s 4thperiod class. I am reading Gym Candy by Carl Deuker it mostly takes place on the football field and at Mick’s house. The Characters in this book is Mick, Drew, and Deshawn. Mick is an all-star running back in fact he is so good that he made the varsity team and he is only in eighth grade. He has got everything a running back needs speed, agility, and a good eye, but he is missing one thing and that is strength. So he hits the gym and tries to bulk up; but he is not seeing results as fast as he wants to see them. So he does something that could get him serious trouble. Read the rest of the book to find out what happens. The author’s purpose is to say that if you work hard then you will get rewarded but you don’t need to take shortcuts to get there. I recommend this book because it is a good football book and teachers you that you don’t need to take short cuts to get where you want to be.

  67. Brenna

    January 5, 2012 at 1:25 pm

My name is Brenna Vine and I am in Dr. Kirk’s 4th period class. I read the book The Adoration of Jenna Fox. It takes place in present time in a small neighborhood. The main character is a girl named Jenna. Her mother, father, and grandmother live with her in a big old house. During the story she meets a boy named Ethan, a strange boy who lives down the street and a girl with prosthetic arms and legs. In this story Jenna has just woken up from an accident. The problem is she doesn’t remember anything. She does not remember her mom, dad, or any of her friends. She doesn’t even remember if she had any friends at all. She does not remember that she used to live in England, or what kind of accident she was in to begin with. She goes on a small adventure trying to remember her old life. Little things are coming back to her slowly but she is impatient. She doesn’t like the feeling that she does not belong. I believe the author’s purpose was to tell about a normal teenage girl who goes through an abnormal situation. It was entertaining and easy to relate to. I recommend this book because I could not put it down the whole time I was reading it, and it was an all around great book.

  68. Sarah

    January 5, 2012 at 1:18 pm

My name is Sarah and I’m from Dr. Kirk’s 4th period class. The book I have recently finished reading is MY Thirteenth Winter, by: Samantha Abeel. This story is about a girl living in the northeastern part of the country during the early 1970’s through the late 1980’s. The main characters include Samantha Abeel and her loving family. This story is mainly about how a young girl named Samantha struggles to overcome a learning disability called dyscalculia. During Samantha’s third through fifth grade years she had no recollection of ever having a disability, and because of that she began have severe anxiety attacks that would hit her at all hours of the day and night. Around her eighth grade year was when she finally found out she had the disability and was able to get the help she deserved. I personally think the theme of this book is that everyone has struggles in their life, but they can easily be overcome with a little hard work. I recommend this book because it teaches you that everyone is different and it truly captures the feelings of the characters as they work to overcome Samantha’s disability.

  69. Danielle

    January 5, 2012 at 1:15 pm

Hi, my name is Danielle. I’m in Dr. Kirk’s 4th period class, and I will be talking about middle school worst by James Patterson. It’s about a young boy in middle school. He goes through a lot of rough times. He is embarrassed every day. So he decides to do something that will get him noticed. He breaks EVERY rule in the whole school rule book. He makes up how to do it and what he’ll get for doing each rule. He also wants to impress a special girl along the way. He does some pretty crazy stuff! He also does it while being bullied all the time. Plus it has pictures on every page! I think the author is trying to say what is going on in middle school and how tough it can be. And he’s totally right! I definitely recommend this book.

  70. Jessica

    January 5, 2012 at 1:15 pm

I’m Jessica and I’m in Dr. Kirks’ 4th period class. I’m reviewing the book, Mockingbird, by Katherine Erskine. The story is about a 10 year old girl named Caitlyn who had as burgers syndrome. The person she was closest to was her brother Devin, but in a school shooting Devin was killed. After that she wished for nothing more than to have him come back. After the shooting she is more confused than before. She just wants closure. Because the truth it, everybody needs closure. I recommend this book because it was without a doubt the best book I ever read. I couldn’t stop reading until I was finished.

  71. Rachel

    January 5, 2012 at 1:12 pm

Hello, my name is Rachel and I am in Dr. Kirk’s fourth period class. My favorite book from this year was Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen. This book takes place in the 21st century on the coast of Florida. In this book the main character is Auden. She is a 15 year old girl whose parent is divorced. There are also many other people in the book like: Eli a 16 year old bike rider. In the book Auden is off of school for summer vacation and she decides to go see her dad and her step mom, but that’s not who all she goes to see. Once she gets there ate gets to meet her new baby sister. So while she is at her dad’s house she works at her step moms store, and guess what is right next door the shop. The Bike Shop. So one day after work she goes to the bike shop, and that’s where her story begins. In this book the author is trying to hook the readers and make them read more. For the library I think you should get this book so everyone can enjoy it as much as I did.

  72. McKenna

    January 5, 2012 at 1:12 pm

Hi I’m McKenna from doctor kirks 4th period class and I’m recommending the book Waves by Sharon Doger. It is a remarkable novel… it is suffused by an atmosphere both sensuous and sinister. Waves is a coming-of-age mystery about first love and tragic loss, and about a family who is drowning in sorrow of losing their beloved daughter. And most importantly, the son who is struggling against the tide to help them. Waves is a story told from two points of views, making this book irristable and hard to put down. I love this book a lot!!! I recommend it to everyone, thanks:)

  73. levi

    January 5, 2012 at 1:11 pm

Hi my name is Levi, and I’m in Dr.Kirk’s 4th period reading class. The book I would like to recommend the book “the lonesome dove” by Larry Mcmurtry. This book is about cowboys in the late 1800s in the western United States. The main Characters captains Gus McCrea, and Woodrow Call are retired rangers is southern Texas looking to drive a cattle herd up to northern Montana. Along the way they face fierce Indians, crazy bandits, and mean cattle rustlers. I think the author wrote this to tell people that faced with the worst challenges you can still make it through as long as you keep trying. This is a good book because it keeps you wanting to read more, also it is the most exiting book I have ever read.

  74. Jenna

    January 5, 2012 at 1:10 pm

Hi, my name is Jenna Hudson and I am in Dr. Kirk’s fourth period reading class. The book I read is titled, “So B. It” written by Sarah Weeks. The story takes place in the perspective of a 13 year old girl named Heidi. Her mother is special needs and she has been raised all of her life in a joint apartment being taken care of by her neighbor, Bernadette, who has a fear of leaving her house. Heidi soon finds a disposable camera with film that is used, but not developed. She takes it to the nearest corner store and recieves the pictures only to find that a younger and pregnant version of her mother stands in most of the pictures next to someone who appears to be her grandmother. But one photo sticks out to her.. a picture of her mother and her “grandmother” in front of a sign that reads Hilltop Home, Liberty, New York. Heidi then buys a bus ticket to Liberty without Bernadette’s consent. No matter how hard Bernadette tries, Heidi’s mind is made up. She begins the trail to Liberty in hopes of her past and stumbles upon what will forever change her future. This book is one of my very favorites, and has even recieved the 2009 Georgia Book Award and the Parents’ Choice Gold Award. I believe the author’s intention of this book was that life always isn’t as it seems and even though it might rattle your brain and seem important, there are always things you will not and can not know. I recommend this book because it keeps you reading for endless periods of time. Page after page, you get reeled in. Happy reading!

  75. Andrew

    January 5, 2012 at 1:08 pm

Hello, my name is Andrew and I am a student in Dr. Kirk’s fourth period reading class. A book that I really liked reading was Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. This book takes place in a world where books are illegal. An extremely big purpose of the government is to limit free thinking. Firemen no longer protect houses from fires, because every house is coated in fire retardant material. Instead, the firemen burn any books in any house with their flamethrowers. The main character is Guy Montag, one of the firemen, who meets a girl who questions whether or not he is really happy. He dismisses any ideas of himself not being happy, but soon realizes he really isn’t. He had been hiding a book in his house, which soon led to more books. He is told by the fire chief that if he doesn’t burn the books in twenty-four hours, he will be apprehended as a criminal and the books will be burned. He tells his wife about the book, and determines that they will read it and that if it is a good book, he will not burn it, and if it has no value, it will be. Montag soon remembers an English professor he met at a point in the past, named Faber. He goes to Faber who gives him an ear piece. Montag goes to the fire house the next day, and tosses only one of his books into the incinerator instead of all of them. I will not give away the rest of this novel, but the purpose of it is a warning. Bradbury does not want our culture to find ideas in books too controversial or allow the world to hate books because they allow too much thought and creativity, because a world without books is a terrifying one. I recommend this book because the world it is set in is very interesting and the characters make it even more so. It’s definitely a remarkable book that is worth taking a look at.

  76. Katie

    January 5, 2012 at 10:50 am

This is Katie from Dr. Kirk’ s 2nd period reading class. I am doing a review on the book Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. The book takes place at Melody’s parent’s house when she was only in fifth grade. Out of My Mind talks out a young girl that is paralyzed and is made fun of at school. Melody’s tries out for the school academic bowl team, but is put down by people saying she is different and shouldn’t be allowed on the team. Sharon is explaining to everyone who reads this book that you should never make fun or tease someone that has a disease and can’t do everything that we can because we may not know the real story to why everything is the way it is. I defiantly would recommend this book to everyone! It is a super good book that makes you want more and more. You won’t be able to stop reading! Hope you enjoy the book!

  77. Laine

    January 5, 2012 at 10:49 am

Hello, my name is Laine and I am in Dr. Kirks 2nd period class. I am writing a blog about the book Dying to Meet You, By: Kate Klise. This book is a GCBA nominee of 2012. I recombined this book because it is a really interesting and entertaining book. Other Nominee books are really long and sometimes boring, but this book is a short story. It is about an author that moves in to a creepy house, and complains about a boy and his cat living there they won’t leave because when the writer bought the house, they came with it. Find out more and what happens in this book. Hope you enjoy.

  78. Kati

    January 5, 2012 at 10:42 am

Hi, my name is Kati. I’m going to be reviewing The Double Life of Zoey Flynn. The setting of the story is this girl Zoey house. Her, her mom, her dad, and her brother are moving. The main character is Zoey. Zoey and her family are moving to a new town. They had never lived anywhere else. Since she’s been in that house since she was a little girl, she was really upset to leave.
She also didn’t want to leave her best friend. She also didn’t want to leave because, of her special room. Her special room was really her closet, but to her it was a place to relax, be herself and draw. When they moved to the new town they really had no place to live. They lived in their van.
Zoey and her brother rode their bikes to school every day. Zoey made a really good new friend. Her friend was upset because Zoey wouldn’t invite her over for a sleep over. She didn’t know Zoey didn’t have a home. Zoey got a house and had a new special place. I think this book was trying to say that, true friends last forever. No matter what the problem. They will be by your side. Zoey thought if she told her friend about what had happened that she would make fun of her, and not be her friend. But, he friend understood and stayed friends. I recommend this book because some parts of it are very touching. The age group of 12-16 would like this book. And, really and truly understand the story. I loved it and got an 100% on the AR test. I also did a written book report on it. I just thought it was a really great book, and you should all check it out.
Thank you for reading this. HAPPY READING! Take care, Bye!

  79. Morgan

    January 5, 2012 at 10:31 am

Hi, I’m Morgan. I’m in Dr. Kirk’s second period class. The book I’ll be recommending is Out Of My Mind by Sharon Draper. It included a girl with a disorder and she wasn’t able to walk, move, or even talk. Her math teacher wasn’t very fair with her, and didn’t think she was smart, even though she’s the smartest girl in the 5th grade, but she was able to be in the math competition, and the won, and was going to be on national TV, quizzing to win, and be the smartest math team in the United States. But is she able to compete? I think Sharon Draper wrote this book because she believes that it will touch people’s hearts, which it touched mine, and many other peoples. I believe you should read this because your heart will be touched too, and it’s too hard to put down. (:

    January 5, 2012 at 9:54 am

My name is chandler and I’m in Dr. Kirk’s 1st period class. The book is called A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer. This story takes place in the Dave Pelzer’s childhood. The main characters in this book are David, mom, and dad. The story is about a young boy whose mom is an extreme abuser. She would beat, burn, stab, break his arm, and poison him. She would also not let him do the things that his brothers got to do. The thing that kept him alive trough all these beatings was his courage to survive. I recommend this book because it is really surprising and interesting

    January 5, 2012 at 9:53 am

My name is Cassandra and I’m in Dr. Kirk’s 1st period. I am recommending you a really good book called tending to grace. The book is written by: Kimberly Newton Fusco. The setting was in the present, and most of it took place at a farm. Some of the characters are: Cornelia, her mom, mom’s boyfriend, and her aunt. The book is mostly about a girl named Cornelia who has to face her, not the challenges that the world has, but the challenges she has to face against herself. She also finds out that her aunt and her have a lot in common, because her aunt also had to face the challenges against herself, because she lost one thing, the reason for her to keep going, her baby, which she died a few months after she was born, because she couldn’t do what other babies would be able to do at that age. I think that the author’s purpose was to make every one face their own challenges, like Cornelia had to do, because she was afraid to talk with anyone, because she thought they would criticize her from what she would have said. So I am recommending this book, because I think it’s the best book i’ve ever read before.

  82. Todd

    January 5, 2012 at 9:52 am

Hi my name is Todd I’m in Dr. Kirk’s first period class. I would like to recommend the book Hatchet by: Gary Paulsen. It takes place in present time and it is about a kid named Brain who is going to see his father in the Canadian woods for the first time since this parents had a divorce, and the pilot has a heart attack. Then plane crashes into the woods. Now he has to survive by himself. I would recommend this book because it is a great book and you will never want to put it down.

A good book to read might be the hunt for red October. I’m not that far but so far it’s a good book. It’s about a Russian submarine named October. I’m not sure what the plot is yet but as far as I can tell it’s about Americans hunting for a Russian nuclear submarine. There is also a movie about it which is supposed to be good but not as good as the book.

I’m Paris and I’m in Dr.Kirk’s 1st period class. The book I’m going to recommend is Out of My Mind by: Sharon M. Draper. It takes place at school mostly, when Melody was in fifth grade. Melody was in the special classes for special people like her. She was always in a wheel chair, she couldn’t walk or talk. But she was very smart just from hearing what people said. She just wanted to be like everyone else because she hates being stuck in a wheel chair and not being able to do what other kids can do. But in the fifth grade she could try out for the Whiz Kids team. It’s where you get asked questions and answer them against another school. Well during the round where they get to see who was on the team that year. There were a hundred questions and Melody got all of them right so she got to go to the semi finals. When they got there they played against two different tournaments and they won both! That means they got to go to Washington D.C and play in the finals! They also got to be on Good Morning America! I think the author’s purpose was to show that even a special kid can be smart and could do some stuff we can do just with a little help. Also I think the author just wanted to show kids how some special kids feel. Plus they just want to fit in. I recommend this book because it’s very good and it makes you somewhat understand special kids.

My name is Emma and I’m in Dr. Kirk’s 1st period class. Right now I am reading the
Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It is taken place in North America set up as twelve districts in the future. The main characters are probably Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. There are some minor characters too like: Rue, Prim, Gale, Cinna, and a lot more. What happens is they pick one girl and one boy from each district to compete in the hunger games. Then they will compete to survive, and the last one alive is the winner. Katniss and Peeta are picked to represent district twelve, the poorest district. Once they start Peeta ends up grouping up with the higher level and Katniss is left on her own. That is until she finds Rue who has been following Katniss for a while. Then it goes from there. I believe the author wrote this to show what could happen in the future. I do recommend this book to anyone because the reader keeps you hooked every second.

My name is Tyler. I am Dr. Kirk’s 1 period class. The book is the Child Called It. Most of it takes place at the house. Some of the characters are the mom, dad, two brothers, and there other son Dave Pelzer. The mom abuses her one son Dave. She makes him do some horrible things. She is very nice two her other two sons. He forced to steel food from other kids at school. How will he ever survive? I think the author wrote this book to help people understand that if think life is mean and unfair look at what he had to through. I recommend this book because it is a good story. Also it has a lot of good points.
